Minister of Trade and Industry Trond Giske visits Havyard-project in China

In 2007 Havyard Group signed contracts for delivery of ship design, detail engineering, equipment and shipbuilding technology for building of 2 + 2 Havyard 842 AHTS in China for a Singaporean ship owner. On his 11 days roundtrip in China, the Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Trond Giske visited Yuexin Shipbuilding which builds the two first vessels of the series.

The first Havyard 842 AHTS from Yuexin Shipbuilding is now conducting sea trials and will be delivered to the ship owner within two weeks. Havyard 842 is a medium sized AHTS with 200 tonnes bollard pull and 350 tonnes AHT winch. It’s an advanced process to build such a vessel and the Chinese shipyard can be proud to deliver the first vessel on time, on budget and with good quality. The good cooperation between Havyard Group, Yuexin and the ship owner POSH (PACC Offshore Services Pte Ltd) has been a condition for this success. The combination of state-of-the-art Norwegian technology and know-how from Havyard Group, knowledge about the Asian marked and operating conditions from the ship owner and the quality delivered from the shipyard has proved successful. For Havyard Group this proves that our concept of delivering products and services to the whole value chain from design to operating of vessels provides a competitive edge and good business opportunities in China onwards.

Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Trond Giske points at China as a market with great potential for Norwegian maritime equipment- and service suppliers. Giske refers to Havyard’s success as an example of Chinese shipyards being an important target for the Norwegian maritime cluster. Norwegian technology and Norwegian suppliers being sought after by Chinese customers creates positive spin-off effects back home in Norway. During his visit at Yuexing Shipbuilding the Minister got a guided tour of the Havyard 842 AHTS under construction at the yard.

Singaporean ship owner POSH has ordered two Havyard 842 AHTS at Yuexin Shipbuilding and another two Havyard 842 CD AHTS at the Chinese shipyard PYOE (PACC Yuexin Ocean Engineering). The two last vessels are prepared for Clean Design Class with double hull.

These projects again show the strength of the Norwegian maritime cluster. In addition to Havyard Group delivering design, detail engineering, equipment and assistance to the shipyard during construction of the vessels several other Norwegian suppliers are delivering equipment and services to these projects. Through continuous development of more competitive products Norwegian suppliers stay attractive to and cooperate with Chinese shipyards and ship owners. This way Chinese shipbuilding will contribute to securing employment in Norway. A major condition for this is that the Norwegian maritime cluster continues to develop and stay competitive. The slogan of an international known supplier of quality products is “Vorsprung durch Technik”. Through being in the frontrunners in technology and knowledge the Norwegian maritime cluster can continue to export products and services to China, although the rule is the other way around, Geir Johan Bakke, President and CEO of Havyard Group replies.
